The Fiqh of Eid al-Adha

The prayer of both Eids is wajib upon any person who is obliged to perform the Friday assembly prayer (Jumu'ah).

How to Perform the Prayer of Eid al-Adha:

1. One will make the intention of praying the Eid prayer;

2. Then the opening ‘Allahu Akbar’ is given, after which the Imam and the followers recite the opening glorification (thana);

3. The additional takbirs are then performed by the Imam and the followers, and they are three takbirs, for which the hands are raised for each one. I.e. one should raise one’s hands with each takbir (to the earlobes), as one does with the opening takbir. After each takbir, one lets the hands rest at one’s sides, pausing briefly after each takbir.

4. After this, the Imam will quietly recite ta`wwudh (seeking refuge with Allah) and basmala;

5. The Imam will then audibly recite al-Fatiha along with another surah;

6. Following this, the Imam will proceed into the bowing posture with the followers;

7. When the Imam rises for the second rak'ah, he is to begin with a quiet recitation the basmala, then he will audibly recite al-Fatiha, followed by a surah;

8. After this, the Imam and the followers are to pronounce the additional takbirs three times, raising the hands for each one, as was done in the first rak'ah;

9. Following this, the Imam is to proceed into the bowing posture with the followers and complete the prayer;

10. After the Eid prayer, there is a khutba (sermon).  It is necessary to listen to this khutba, and everything disliked in the Friday khutba is disliked here.
